RESUMO

The flavor profiles of fresh and aged fermented peppers obtained from four varieties were thoroughly compared in this study. A total of 385 volatile compounds in fermented pepper samples were detected by flavoromics (two-dimensional gas chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometry). As fermentation progressed, both the number and the total concentration of volatile compounds changed, with esters, alcohols, acids, terpenoids, sulfur compounds, and funans increasing, whereas hydrocarbons and benzenes decreased. In contrast to the fresh fermented peppers, the aged fermented samples exhibited lower values of pH, total sugars, and capsaicinoids but higher contents of organic acids and free amino acids. Furthermore, the specific differences and characteristic aroma substances among aged fermented peppers were unveiled by multivariate statistical analysis. Overall, 64 volatiles were screened as differential compounds. In addition, Huanggongjiao samples possessed the most abundant differential volatiles and compounds with odor activity values > 1, which were flavored with fruity, floral, and slightly phenolic odors. Correlation analysis demonstrated that the levels of 23 key aroma compounds (e.g., ethyl 2-methylbutyrate, 1-butanol, and ethyl valerate) showed a significantly positive correlation with Asp, Glu and 5 organic acids. By contrast, there is a negative association between the pH value and total sugar. Overall, aging contributed significantly to the flavor attributes of fermented peppers.

RESUMO

The changes in flavours, volatile aromas and microbial communities of fermented peppers with different fermentation years and their relationships were investigated in this study. Results indicated a gradual increase in organic acids during fermentation, whereas free amino acids and capsaicinoids reached stability after 1 year of fermentation. Overall, the analysis detected 340 volatile compounds in fermented peppers and regarded 69 of them as differential compounds. Peppers fermented for 2 (FY2) and 4 years (FY4) possessed a greater number of differential volatiles with large odour activity values, thus endowing them with more favourable flavours. Hence, metagenomic analysis compared their microbial communities and functional annotations. Results revealed that Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and Zygosaccharomyces rouxii were the dominant bacterium and fungus, and metabolism was the main Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway in FY2. Correlation analysis demonstrated that Hyphopichia, Kazachstania and Clavispora were highly positively correlated with 12 key aroma flavours.

RESUMO

The Masai giraffe has experienced a population decline from 70,000 to 35,000 in the past three decades and was declared an endangered subspecies by the IUCN in 2019. The remaining number of Masai giraffe are geographically separated by the steep cliffs of the Gregory Rift escarpments (GRE) in Tanzania and Kenya dividing them into two populations, one west and one east of the GRE. The cliffs of the GRE are formidable barriers to east-west dispersal and gene flow and the few remaining natural corridors through the GRE are occupied by human settlements. To assess the impact of the GRE on Masai giraffe gene flow, we examined whole genome sequences of nuclear and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation in populations located east (Tarangire ecosystem) and west (Serengeti ecosystem) of the GRE in northern Tanzania. Evidence from mtDNA variation, which measures female-mediated gene flow, suggests that females have not migrated across the GRE between populations in the Serengeti and Tarangire ecosystems in the past ~289,000 years. The analysis of nuclear DNA variation compared to mtDNA DNA variation suggests that male-mediated gene flow across the GRE has occurred more recently but stopped a few thousand years ago. Our findings show that Masai giraffes are split into two populations and fulfill the criteria for designation as distinct evolutionary significant units (ESUs), which we denote as western Masai giraffe and eastern Masai giraffe. While establishing giraffe dispersal corridors across the GRE is impractical, conservation efforts should be focused on maintaining connectivity among populations within each of these two populations. The importance of these efforts is heightened by our finding that the inbreeding coefficients are high in some of these Masai giraffe populations, which could result in inbreeding depression in the small and fragmented populations.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Epiglottic cysts are cysts that occur under the mucosa of the epiglottis. Patients with severe cysts may have difficulty in breathing. Slurred speech usually occurs in cerebrovascular diseases, especially with slurred speech as the starting symptom. CASE REPORT: We describe the case of a patient with slurred speech as the first symptom. The patient was a 53-year-old man with slurred speech as the first symptom, and he was initially considered to have an acute cerebral infarction. However, the results of the cranial magnetic resonance imaging examination did not support the diagnosis. The possibility of neck tumor recurrence was considered based on past medical history. The findings of a computed tomography examination of the neck suggested an epiglottic cyst. The effect of anti-inflammatory and surgical treatment was significant, and speech returned to normal. CONCLUSION: This case emphasizes that neurologists need to be vigilant when dealing with patients with slurred speech, which may be one of the clinical manifestations of epiglottic cysts.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: In this study, we measured the volume of customized tumor models in the periocular area using three-dimensional (3D) stereophotogrammetry and evaluated the reproducibility of these measurements. METHODS: Five tumor models of different colors and sizes were placed in different periocular positions, and 3D facial images were obtained from 68 healthy adult volunteers. Subsequently, the volumes of the tumor models were measured, and the intra- and interrater reproducibility was assessed. RESULTS: The gray 6 mm model revealed the highest reliable measurements in both Caucasians (intra- and interrater intraclass correlation coefficients of 0.981 and 0.899, mean absolute difference of 1.446 and 3.327 mm3, relative error measurement of 3.497% and 8.120%, technical error of measurement of 1.450 and 3.105 mm3, and relative technical error of measurement of 3.506% and 7.580%) and Asians (0.968 and 0.844, 1.974 and 4.067 mm3, 4.772% and 9.526%, 2.100 and 4.302 mm3, and 5.076% and 10.076%, respectively). The highest reliability of measurements in the lateral upper eyelid (0.88 and 0.95, 4.042 and 3.626 mm3, 9.730% and 9.020%, 5.714 and 3.358 mm3, and 9.730% and 8.350%, respectively) and medial upper eyelid (0.81 and 0.89, 4.313 and 4.226 mm3, 9.730% and 9.020%, 6.098 and 4.069 mm3, and 9.730% and 8.350%, respectively) with eyes closed was evident in Caucasians, while the same trend (0.841 and 0.815, 2.828 and 3.757 mm3, 9.860% and 9.840%, 4.052 and 4.308 mm3, and 9.860% and 9.740%, respectively) was observed in Asians in the medial canthus with eyes closed. CONCLUSIONS: This study confirms, for the first time, the high reliability of periocular tumor volume measurements using 3D stereophotogrammetry, suggesting its feasibility for eyelid tumor measurement. Further trials are required to investigate its clinical use for documentation and follow-up of different eyelid tumors.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To determine age-and sex-related changes in periocular morphology in Caucasians using a standardized protocol. METHODS: Healthy Caucasian volunteers aged 18-35 and 60-90 years old were recruited from the Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine and University Hospital, Cologne, between October 2018 and May 2020. Volunteers with facial asymmetry, facial deformities, history of facial trauma, facial surgery, botox injection, eyelid ptosis, strabismus, or nystagmus, were excluded. Standardized three-dimensional facial photos of 68 young volunteers and 73 old volunteers were taken in this clinical practice. Position changes of endocanthion, pupil center, and exocanthion were analyzed in different age and gender groups, including palpebral fissure width (PFW): distance between endocanthions (En-En), pupil centers (Pu-Pu), exocanthions (Ex-Ex), endocanthion and nasion (En-Na), pupil center and nasion (Pu-Na), exocanthion and nasion (Ex-Na), endocanthion and pupil center (Pu-En), exocanthion and pupil center (Pu-Ex), and palpebral fissure inclination (PFI); angle of endocanthions to nasion (En-Na-En), pupils to nasion (Pu-Na-Pu), exocanthions to nasion (Ex-Na-Ex); endocanthion inclination (EnI), and exocanthion inclination (ExI). RESULTS: PFW, En-En, Ex-Na, Pu-Ex, PFI, ExI, and Ex-Na-Ex were significantly different between the young and old groups (p ≤ 0.004). There were sex-related differences in PFW, Ex-Ex, En-Na, Pu-Na, Ex-Na, Pu-En, PFI, and EnI between both groups (p ≤ 0.041). CONCLUSION: The position change of the pupil is minimal relative to age; it is preferred to establish the reference plane to describe periocular changes. The endocanthion tends to move temporally and inferiorly, while the exocanthion tends to shift nasally and inferiorly with age.

RESUMO

AIM: To investigate the reliability of a modified three-dimensional distraction test (3D-DT) and three-dimensional pinch test (3D-PT) for assessing lower eyelid tension (LET). METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 97 volunteers including 97 eyelids with no history of trauma, tumor, or reconstructive surgeries. Six three-dimensional photographs were acquired for each participant, including two photographs obtained in a neutral position (NP), two using a modified 3D-DT with a 15.9-grammes stainless steel eyelid hook performed, and two using 3D-PT. RESULTS: The mean absolute differences between NP, 3D-DT, and 3D-PT measurements varied between 0.07 and 7.42, 0.10 and 13.10, and 0.07 and 15.97, respectively; technical error of measurement varied between 0.05 and 7.81, 0.09 and 10.19, and 0.07 and 12.47, respectively; and relative error measurements varied between 0.10% and 11.50%, 0.16% and 30.51%, and 0.11% and 38.75%, respectively. For intra-rater reliability, the intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were more than 0.80 in seven out of eight measurements obtained in the NP and 3D-DT, whereas those obtained in the 3D-PT were as low as less than 0.30 by rater 1; the ICCs of all the measurements obtained in all the positions (NP, 3D-DT, and 3D-PT) were more than 0.80 by rater 2. For inter-rater reliability six out of eight NP and 3D-DT measurements had an ICC greater than 0.80, whereas those of 3D-PT measurements were less than 0.30. For intra-method reliability, the ICCs of all the NP measurements were more than 0.87, whereas those of the six 3D-DT measurements and four 3D-PT measurements were more than 0.80. CONCLUSION: Our study results prove that the modified 3D-DT, which involves the use of an eyelid hook, can be a highly reliable method for evaluating LET. Furthermore, this novel and simple method may be utilized as the basis for further investigation and routine pre- and postoperative clinical evaluation.

RESUMO

Background: We assessed whether ICT can alleviate 6-OHDA-induced cell damage via inhibition of oxidative stress by evaluating the protective effect of icaritin (ICT) against 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-induced MN9D cell damage and further determined the mechanism by which ICT reduces oxidative stress. Methods: MN9D cells were treated with 6-OHDA, to study the mechanism underlying the neuroprotective effect of ICT. MN9D cell damage was assessed by the CCK-8 assay, flow cytometry was performed to measure the content of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cells, a superoxide dismutase (SOD) kit was used to evaluate SOD activity, and Western blotting was used to measure the expression of α-synuclein (α-Syn), Tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), nuclear factor erythroid-2 related factor 2 (Nrf2), and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1). Results: ICT reduced damage to MN9D cells induced by 6-OHDA. ICT increased SOD activity and TH expression and reduced ROS production and α-Syn expression. ICT promoted the translocation of Nrf2 from the cytoplasm to the nucleus and further increased the protein expression of HO-1. Conclusions: ICT protects against 6-OHDA-induced dopaminergic neuronal cell injury by attenuating oxidative stress, and the mechanism is related to modulate the activities of Nrf2, HO-1 protein, and SOD.

RESUMO

Purpose: Portable three-dimensional imaging systems are becoming increasingly common for facial measurement analysis. However, the reliability of portable devices may be affected by the necessity to take three pictures at three time points. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of portable devices for assessing the periocular region. Methods: In 60 Caucasian volunteers (120 eyes), four facial scans (twice for each instrument) using the portable VECTRA H2 and static VECTRA M3 devices were performed; patients' heads were kept straight, looking ahead, with a neutral facial expression. One assessor set 52 periocular landmarks in the periocular area of each image and subsequently assessed intra- and inter-device reliability by comparing two within-device measurements and one between-device measurement, respectively. Results: The mean absolute difference (MAD) (0.13 and 0.12 units), relative error of measurement (REM) (0.61 and 0.68%), technical error of measurement (TEM)(1.02 and 0.80 units), relative TEM (rTEM) (5.51 and 4.43%), and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) (0.89, 0.89) showed good intra-device reliability for M3 and H2; MAD (0.63, 0.62 units), REM (2.83, 2.69%), TEM (1.31, 1.10 units), rTEM (7.62, 5.57%), and ICC (0.79, 0.83) indicated that inter-device reliability deteriorated compared to intra-device reliability and that the inter-device reliability of the first scan (moderate) was lower than that of the average of the two scans (good). Conclusions: The portable VECTRA H2 device proved reliable in assessing most periocular linear distances, curve distances, and angles; some improvement in inter-device reliability can be achieved by using the average of two scans.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Few studies quantitatively investigated the degree of medial canthal tendon (MCT) laxity using three-dimensional (3D) stereophotography as two-dimensional (2D) imaging systems are still widely used in periocular anthropometry. Hence, in this study, we aimed to compare 2D and 3D technique in assessing MCT laxity and to investigate the correlation between them. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in randomly recruited healthy volunteers with no history of eyelid disease and surgery. Predictor variables were the linear measurements derived from 2D and 3D images, respectively, and the outcome variable was MCT laxity. Covariates including age and sex were also included in our correlation observations. One-side measurements for each image were randomly selected for our study. Bivariate correlation was applied to evaluate the correlation between 2D and 3D measurements. Linear regression was used to investigate the correlation between the predictor and outcome variables. RESULTS: Ninety-five Caucasian volunteers (50 men and 45 women, 95 eyes) between 22 and 84 years of age (58.5 ± 16.0 years) were included in our study. The 2 sets of measurements for MCT laxity were 3.13 ± 0.75 and 2.62 ± 1.50 mm on 2D images (P = .18) and 2.49 ± 1.58 and 2.58 ± 1.72 mm on 3D images (P = .23). A significant correlation was observed between 3D measurements and MCT laxity (P < .01), while no significant correlation was found between 2D measurements and MCT laxity (P = .64). CONCLUSIONS: Our results revealed that measurements on 3D images could be predictors of MCT laxity and might be applied as a base and a reference for speculating the 3D MCT laxity in further research and clinical evaluation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To explore the research trends for uveal melanoma with bibliometric methods using Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) and PubMed (PM). METHODS: To find UM-related studies, "uveal melanoma" was used as search term in the WoSCC and PM for the period time from 2000 to 2020. Bibliographic coupling analysis was used to investigate the journals with the highest number of UM-related publications. VOSviewer (VV) was used for mapping the knowledge domain and visualizing the co-occurrence of terms, authors, organizations, countries, co-citation literature, and keywords. The knowledge map based on WoSCC and PM was compared. RESULTS: In the WoSCC 3,748 articles were found, while in PM the search resulted in 3,403 articles. The number of original articles has steadily grown in general in the past two decades. The top ten authors were contributing to 23% (n = 856) of all publications, while the top 10 institutions published 41% (n = 1524) of all articles. The top 3 journals with the highest number of publications for UM-related research included Investigative ophthalmology & visual science, Ophthalmology, and British Journal of Ophthalmology. Co-occurrence analysis based on author keywords showed 6 clusters. The most frequent keywords included are metastasis, prognosis, and brachytherapy. The latest research hotspots focused on BAP1, immunotherapy and GNAQ. CONCLUSIONS: Genetics and immunology are the latest research frontiers in uveal melanoma. There is a clear need for interdisciplinary, molecular and clinical research approaches to improve the fatal prognosis of uveal melanoma patients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Standardized pre-operative assessment of the lower eyelid tension is essential to determine the optimal surgical technique. However, quantitative analysis using the conventional distraction test is inaccurate and user-dependent. Our purpose was to introduce a novel, standardized three-dimensional distraction test for measuring lower eyelid tension and to determine its standard values in a Caucasian population. METHODS: In 94 participants (50 men and 44 women; age 21-85 years), a 15.9-g weighted eyelid hook was used to pull down the lower eyelid. Two three-dimensional images were acquired with a VECTRA M3 stereophotogrammetry device-one in the neutral position without a hook and the other in the distracted position with the eyelid hook. The images of all participants in both positions were measured twice by a single observer. RESULTS: There was no clinical (>1 mm) or statistically significant difference between the two repeated measurements of all the inter-landmark linear distances in both positions (P≥0.05, respectively). The mean distracted displacement between the neutral and distracted position for margin reflex distance was 5.50±1.53 mm, without any age-specific difference (P=0.08); however, a significant gender-specific difference was observed as men had significantly greater displacement than women (P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Our proposed standardized three-dimensional distraction test for assessing lower eyelid tension using an eyelid hook and a simple landmark-based system seems to provide high reliability. This novel and simple method might be helpful for the preoperative planning of eyelid surgeries.

RESUMO

Nontoxic tin-based perovskite solar cells (Sn-PSCs) as a promising alternative to toxic Pb-PSCs have drawn great attention in recent years for their environmental friendliness and unique optoelectronic properties. However, both the efficiency and long-term stability of Sn-PSCs are considerably inferior to those of Pb-based ones. One of the main reasons is the difficulty in obtaining high-quality Sn-perovskite films due to the rapid crystallization of Sn-perovskites, which also results in poor device reproducibility. Here, we report a novel cation exchange strategy to prepare high-quality formamidinium tin triiodide (FASnI3) perovskite films with a better controlled crystallization process and improved reproducibility, which allows easy access to smooth and pinhole-free perovskite films with oriented crystal growth, enlarged grain size, and reduced trap-state density. The corresponding Sn-PSCs show excellent photovoltaic performance with a champion efficiency of 9.11%, comparable to the best results reported for FASnI3-PSCs, and the devices also demonstrate outstanding long-term stability without encapsulation. Our results offer a practical strategy for fabricating Sn-PSCs with superb performance and stability.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Assessment of MCT laxity is critical to the surgery options. Our study aimed to analyze the reliability of measuring medial canthal tendon (MCT) laxity by using a novel standardized three-dimensional lateral distraction test (3D-LDT). METHODS: Forty-eight Caucasian volunteers (25 males and 23 females, 96 eyes) between 22 and 84 years of age (55.6 ± 18.6 years old) were included in our study. From a neutral position, the lower eyelid was gently pulled laterally along a horizontal line to define the most distracted position of the lower punctum. Both in the neutral and distracted position, standardized 3D images were acquired for each subject by two observers, and each image were measured twice by two raters. Four landmarks and six corresponding linear measurements were evaluated for intra-rater, inter-rater, and inter-method reliability. RESULTS: Intra-rater, inter-rater and inter-method reliability analyses of 3D-LDT revealed an intraclass correlation of more than 95%, a mean absolute difference of less than 1 mm, and a technical error of measurement of less than 1 mm. Measurements of relative error (2.59-12.04%) and relative technical error (1.83-16.05%) for the inter-landmarks distance from pupil center to the lower punctum were higher than those from limbus nasal center to the lower punctum (6.13-30.39 and 4.34-26.85%, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: This study provided high reliability of the three-dimensional lateral distraction test (3D-LDT) for assessing medial canthal tendon (MCT) laxity, which were never evaluated by digital imaging system. RESUMO

Objectives: To present the clinical features of and diagnostic methods used for macular coloboma (MC), and to analyze the factors associated with best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) in patients with MC.Methods: A systematic review using the MEDLINE (PubMed), EMBASE, LILACS, and Cochrane databases was performed. The factors associated with BCVA were analyzed. Results: A total of 21 patients (mean age at diagnosis, 18.1 ± 14.6 years) with 36 eyes affected by MC (5 unilateral, 16 bilateral) were included in the study. All 21 patients (100%) had undergone a good-quality fundus examination. The size of the MC lesions ranged from 1.0 × 1.2 to 4.0 × 4.0 disc diameters (DD). Twenty-seven (73%) eyes had pigmented MC, seven (19%) had non-pigmented MC, and one (3%) had an unspecific type. The diagnosis was confirmed using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) in 16 (43.2%) eyes. A positive correlation was found between BCVA and the type of MC (ß = 0.876, p = .006) and abnormal eye movement (ß = 0.087, p = .018), and a negative correlation was found between BCVA and a contributory medical history of ventricular septal defect (ß = -0.327, p = .001).Conclusions: Pigmented MC was the most common type and had the highest possibility of causing impaired vision in the affected eyes. Additionally, joint examinations should be applied for diagnostic confirmation of MC. Furthermore, fundoscopy, electroretinogram, electrooculography, fundus fluorescein angiography, and SD-OCT are all critical for differential diagnosis of MC-like lesions.

RESUMO

Three-dimensional (3D) stereophotography area measurements are essential for describing morphology in the periocular region. However, its reliability has not yet been sufficiently validated. The objective of this study was to evaluate the reliability of 3D stereophotogrammetric area measurements in the periocular region. Forty healthy volunteers had five flat paper objects placed at each of the seven periocular positions including the endocanthion and the upper medial, upper middle, upper lateral, lower medial, lower middle, and the lower lateral eyelid. Two series of photographic images were captured twice by the same investigator. Each image of the first series was measured twice by the same rater, while images of both series were measured once by a second rater. Differences between these measurements were calculated, and the intrarater, interrater, and intramethod reliability was evaluated for intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs), mean absolute differences (MADs), technical errors of measurements (TEMs), relative errors of measurements (REMs), and relative TEM (rTEM). Our results showed that 21.2% of all ICCs were considered as excellent, 45.5% were good, 27.3% were moderate, and 6.1% were poor. The interrater ICC for the endocanthion location was 0.4% on a low level. MAD values for all objects were less than 0.3 mm2, all TEM were less than 1 mm2, the REM and rTEM were less than 2% for all objects, showing high reliability. 3D stereophotogrammetry is a highly reliable system for periocular area measurements and may be used in the clinical routine for planning oculoplastic surgeries and for evaluating changes in periocular morphology.Level of Evidence IV This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article. RESUMO

Purpose: To evaluate the postoperative effect of the lateral tarsal strip (LTS) procedure in treating lower eyelid involutional ectropion. Methods: A retrospective study was performed on 85 eyelids in 67 patients with involutional ectropion who underwent LTS procedure. Pre- and postoperative lower eyelid laxity and ocular symptoms as well as perioperative complications were evaluated. Snap back test was performed to evaluate the elasticity of lateral canthal tendon loosening and, a lower lid distraction test was performed to evaluate the degree of severity before surgery. Ocular surface diseases were evaluated by the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), and symptoms including conjunctivitis, corneal ulcer, dry eye syndrome, and ocular pain were recorded. All patients were evaluated within one week and during the follow-up period of 4.2 â€‹± â€‹8.3 months. Furthermore, we reviewed the studies that also investigated the surgical effect of the LTS procedure in the literature from 1979 to 2019. Results: The success rate was 95%. Only four eyelids required a second surgical intervention. Seventy-three (86%) eyelids had an excellent position after surgery, 9 (11%) only little improvement, and three had no improvement. No significant difference was found in the postoperative effects between different degrees of ectropion (p â€‹> â€‹0.05). No statistical correlation was found between surgical improvements and the ectropion severity (P â€‹> â€‹0.05). Fifty-two out of 85 eyes had no discomfort after the surgery. Mild complications included epiphora in 13 eyes (three cases caused by lacrimal punctum eversion), ocular pain in 12 eyes, wound hemorrhage in 12 eyes, and edema in 9 eyelids immediately after surgery, in which 91.2% (n â€‹= â€‹21) disappeared within one week and did not need any further treatment. Conclusions: The lateral tarsal strip procedure can provide an aesthetically pleasing result for correcting the mild to moderate lower eyelid ectropion while maintaining decent eyelid function.

RESUMO

Huntington's disease (HD) is caused by Huntingtin (Htt) gene mutation resulting in the loss of striatal GABAergic neurons and motor functional deficits. We report here an in vivo cell conversion technology to reprogram striatal astrocytes into GABAergic neurons in both R6/2 and YAC128 HD mouse models through AAV-mediated ectopic expression of NeuroD1 and Dlx2 transcription factors. We found that the astrocyte-to-neuron (AtN) conversion rate reached 80% in the striatum and >50% of the converted neurons were DARPP32+ medium spiny neurons. The striatal astrocyte-converted neurons showed action potentials and synaptic events, and projected their axons to the targeted globus pallidus and substantia nigra in a time-dependent manner. Behavioral analyses found that NeuroD1 and Dlx2-treated R6/2 mice showed a significant extension of life span and improvement of motor functions. This study demonstrates that in vivo AtN conversion may be a disease-modifying gene therapy to treat HD and other neurodegenerative disorders.
